GIGTOPIA

OVERVIEW

In a world where technologies dissolve the scarcity of human labour, traditional jobs fragment into agile, temporary, and algorithmically mediated tasks. Gigtopia envisions a decentralized platform where job is no longer defined by fixed position but by fluid skills. It adapts to the changing nature of work and emerging technologies. Through this speculative design, the project questions how digital infrastructures, learning systems, and algorithmic governance may shape what it means to work, learn, and existence as a labouring.

About the project

GIGTOPIA is a fictional utopian platform that encourages us to rethink the irrationalities in today’s career system.

In this algorithm-driven environment, individuals are gamified into measurable labour units. Traditional career paths dissolve, replaced by fluid, self-directed exploration. Users navigate virtual embodied experiences to discover their strengths, interests, and potential directions, gradually shaping their own evolving career identities.

Design Brief

  • DECENTRALIZATION. Construct work identities through participation.

  • AVATAR. Forming a skill-based identity independent of social labels.

  • ALGORITHMIC EQUALITY. Token-based system rewards collaboration and contribution, granting users governance rights and shared ownership of the platform.

We live in an era where labour market remains deeply unequal and alienated. Barriers rooted in gender, race, and neurodiversity continue to shape who gets hired, promoted, and included.

Gigtopia envisions this utopian future, a labour ecosystem where humans are fully de-identified, where gender, colour, and cognitive difference no longer exist, only data, tasks, and algorithmic efficiency. Yet, this equality provokes a paradox: does the erasure of identity free us from bias, or does it erase the very humanity that makes difference meaningful? Between encrypted freedom and algorithmic order, Gigtopia invites reflection on whether the end of discrimination also means the end of individuality.
