About the project

This project functions as a design fiction to provoke critical reflection on the irrationalities of current career systems. It investigates the sociotechnical implications of algorithmic governance and virtual identities on human existence and labor. It probes how decentralised infrastructures can redefine career trajectories, moving from static roles toward fluid, evolving identites.

In a world where technologies dissolve the scarcity of human labour, traditional jobs fragment into agile, temporary, and algorithmically mediated tasks.

GIGTOPIA, borns in this background, is a decentralised, algorithm-driven platform where traditional static roles are replaced by fluid, skill-based identities.

Design Brief

In this scenario, individuals are gamified into measurable labour units. Individuals navigate through virtual embodied experiences and algorithm governance to discover their strengths, interests, and potential directions, gradually shaping their own evolving identities.


  • Decentralisation. Explores distributed governance models where labor identities are co-constructed through active participation rather than top-down institutional validation.


  • Mediated Avatar. A tangible manifestation of skill-based identity, designed to decouple professional potential from entrenched socio-cultural biases and traditional social labels.


  • Algorithmic Equity. Prototyping a token-based system that rewards collective contribution, investigating how shared platform ownership might recalibrate the power dynamics within digital labor markets.

We live in an era where labour market remains deeply unequal and alienated. Barriers rooted in gender, race, and neurodiversity continue to shape who gets hired, promoted, and included.


Gigtopia envisions this utopian future, a labour ecosystem where humans are fully de-identified, only data, tasks, and algorithmic efficiency. Yet, this exposes a societal paradox: does the erasure of individual identity through datafication truly eliminate bias, or does it dismantle the very humanity that makes diversity meaningful?


Between encrypted freedom and algorithmic order, Gigtopia serves as. provocation for researchers and policymakers to assess transformation pathways in technology development.
